So it was the best of all worlds, I think, when I got into a band that had the ability to play in a progressive way but was open-minded about writing songs. The next show is sold out. And we ended up making two more recordswe did Look Into the Future and then Next, and each record sold progressively less than the last one, but we attained a huger live audience, because we were playing live so much. A lot of them are criticizing you because they are frustrated musicians. They love the band enough to lay down on the sidewalk? That's self indulgent as far as I'm concerned. Did they give you any advice? And it took a few more months, until October, and then I was ready, and found the right doctor for me. So I decided to try drums. AD: I used to do a lot of push-ups, sit- ups, and all that to keep myself feeling healthy, but I was still getting drained. And the show was gonna air on Sunday, finally, my publisher got back to me saying well, they need to know, and I said, If theyll tell me how its used, then Ill be glad to let go of my own equal approval. So I had to swear to not tell nobody, which I did, and they told me how the show ends. With the other company that Im a part of, Nocturne [a video-production studio]between that and the residuals that I get, yes, I could live comfortably and just hang it up. After all those years of doing everything, it didnt change my original drive, my need to get some music out there or do something creative. But there was only so much I could get. And I just started putting the stumble to it, felt like it was gonna be a stumble, and tried to give it some Hendrix-y type chords, to make it sound cool, and then I added a bridge to that, for a guitar solo, and that one was done, in about ten minutes. I look at people like BB King and I go, man, God bless em. Bob Welch: Three Hearts Up His Sleeve In my lifetime, to see another generation embrace this? There was one guy who really gave me a hard time taking apart everything I did. Aynsley was also a member of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. [laughs] Youve gotta print my response. But I personally thought it was dumb. That doesnt feel too great to me. He 'will sort of jump out and start putting ideas down which I often jump on. If you. I mean, gee whiz. And so everybody packed their stuff, went home, and Im hearing that were gonna be off for maybe a couple months, three months, six months, whateverbut it turned out to be close to eight to ten years. Im serious. And some funk. But if you're backing up a soloist, the fill you played on the record might not get behind what he's doing on stage at that particular moment, because he's doing something different. That was one of the most cathartic and painful and wonderful experiences Ive ever had, to go through the entire catalog, all the B-sides of albums that Id forgotten about, and remember everything about the sessions, and remember the writing of em, the struggles, the accomplishments. I think he disliked Bowie so he was giving him a hard time, and me too. During one of my first gigs with them, they gave me a drum solo. And then, there's Cynthia Albritton, known now as Cynthia Plaster Caster, who collects a somewhat different kind of keepsake: plaster molds of famous rock and roll penises. But I didn't want to play that long. But for the most part, Im just glad that I didnt completely F up everything. They were of the generation we were speaking of earlier, that newer generation of fans. Thats right. RM: Have you experimented with any electronic percussion? So I decided it was time to get rid of that band arid start another one. She would be on one side of the stage with the orchestra, and I would be on the other, so there was a gap between us. Well, there was no proving to us that he could sing. And the only one that was consistent was, When the pain gets great enough, youll replace the hip. And I said, Excuse me? One time, I went therethere used to be a coffee shop right in front of it, and I was having coffee, watching people. And I think without the year off, I wouldnt ever have gotten to that place. I feel in control of the situation. I was riding my Harley a lot, all throughout the San Joaquin Valley. I met him when Journey was opening up for Jeff Beck, before Steve was in the band. His playing always has a bit of a flair to it, but I think he's always a supportive musician and he doesn't overplay. And I think what Steve felt at that point that he wanted to fold the band and go back to working on his grandfathers ranch. Whether its making a movie or making music. but you were never a critics band. They like to criticize you note for note as though they have higher ideas about what should be happening up there. But it just hasnt happened. It was like getting over some kind of love affair, you know.
